nntpcached anyone?

Has anyone had any experience (positive or negative) with compiling
and running the nntpcache proxy?  <http://www.nntpcache.org>

It seems to be a defunct project, but the web page does claim OS X
compatibility, so I figured a Linux/PPC install should be ok too (ie
no endian problems and glibc compatible).

But, when I run it, it segfaults (called a 'page error' by nntpcached)
after listing the overview.fmt
