G4 400mhz and DHCP

I'm trying to connect a powermac g4 to my router. Under all 3 os's 
(9/10.2/YDL 2.3) I get the same problem: DHCP fails to detect the router. 
I have tried both simple and crosover ethernet cables. The light on the 
router for the g4 just keeps flashing. I tried using the exact same 
configuration on the desktop g4 that I have on my powerbook g4 with os 
10.2 but still no connection.
Is there a problem with my ethernet card? How can I find out for sure 
where the problem is?
