please help: Network configuration on G3 Powerbook "Wallstreet"

I have a G3 powerbook ("wallstreet", i think), and i
just installed YDL 3.0. it's "old world", so i use
BootX.
When I launch the freshly installed mac os 9.2 the
ethernet works fine without any configuration on my
part. YDL, however, can't seem to connect. In the
network configuration app, i have a device called eth0
that claims it's active, but under hardware there is
nothing. I tried to make a new hardware device, but I
don't know what type of adapter my computer has. I
tried modprobe on every apple driver in the list with
no luck. and lsmod doesn't return anything i recognize
as an ethernet driver (dmasound_pmac, dmasound_core,
i2c-core, soundcore, autofs, ipt_REJECT,
iptable_filter, ip_tables). but i don't know anything
really about linux. do i have to compile a driver? (i
know nothing about compiling drivers) shouldn't this
have happened during instalation?
i guess i should say that in
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8d/kernel/net there are a bunch of
things that show up in the hardware list of the
network configuration app, but these don't work
either.

Any help anybody can provide would be enormously
apriciated.

Thanks,
peter
