 You will be pleasantly surprised. Pine does support IMAP and SSL/TLS.
Since my server has a self signed certificate with just SSL (no TLS),
here's what I had to set my inbox-path to:

 
{mymailserver.mcgill.ca/notls/ssl/novalidate-cert}INBOX.
