YDL 3.0/iMac DV SE - it works, but screen goes black after first successful graphical login

I had the same problem on a "summer 2000" iMac (350 MHz G3,
pre-Firewire), and after much futzing around with the kinds of things
you mentioned, I re-installed with a text login.  That didn't solve
my problem, but it did allow me to type in the terminal:

export DISPLAY=':0.0'

which seemed to do the trick.  I then started X and it's been running
fine ever since.
