How to configure ppp0 for ADSL ?

I have tried that; the config tool looks all right, but it does not work fo=
r
me. The sort of answer I get is

Cannot activate network device ppp0
/sbin/adsl-start: line 218 1675 terminated
/sbin/ifup: configuration for ppp0 not found.

And more or less the same about eth0.
At this stage, I think I must look into the possibility of hardware trouble=
.
