YDL 3.0 install quits - missing /.discinfo

i've tried a few times now to install YDL 3.0 on my 9600+400mhz 
sonnet G3. has YDL 2.3.
the lovely anaconda insatller (very easy) seems to get most of the 
way but then fails each time (tried different packages)
each try quits out with something not being able to be opened and the 
final call is:
/mnt/source/.discinfo
error 2 - no such file...

where might it be?
