screen goes black..

It has nothing to do with external vs internal HDs and everything 
to do with video modes.

Try using the text login and telling XF86config to use the "fbdev" 
framebuffer.

I sure wish somebody would publish a detailed "how to" for dealing 
with these kinds of problems.
