Function key problems with YDL3.1

I have found it impossible to switch to a console from X under YDL on my
PowerBook G4.  Normally the key combination would be Alt+Ctrl+F2-F5, to
drop out of X and switch to a console.  This doesn't work at all on my
Powerbook.  Is anyone else experiencing this problem at all?

I have already tried editing pbbuttonsd.conf and even disabling the
daemon altogether on boot and it still does not work.
