3.1 ftp install

Hi,
I have a lombard powerbook from which I can start up
using the cd, but as soon as the installer tries to
install packages from the cd it grinds away at the cd,
and on terminal 4 (i think? doesn't matter) i see tons
of decode errors from the cd (i think my cd drive is
screwed). is it possible, after starting up from the
cd, to install via ftp? i can find no info for this on
ydl's site. thanks!
