C Compiler cannot create executables

This is bad advice.  It should not be followed and such bad advice
should not be given.  One should never be logged in as root unless one
is doing something that absolutely requires it.  To do as you suggested
is effectively to run Windows with a different user interface.

Software package compilation never requires root privileges.  The most
likely answer is that the compiler or some of the tools it requires
have not been installed.

On commercial UNIX platforms, licensing issues might also be responsible
(i.e. the compilers have been installed but not their licenses), but
this is obviously not relevant to Linux platforms and gcc.

To the original poster: What are the error messages immediately preceding
"cannot create executables", and what are the contents of config.log?
