C Compiler cannot create executables

What do you see when you just type 'gcc' or 'ld' at the command
prompt?
gcc: No input files
ld: no input files

To the original poster: What are the error messages immediately preceding
"cannot create executables", and what are the contents of config.log?
Well all of the sudden he gives me another error:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
*** The command 'gcc -o conftest -g -02 conftest.c failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.

and the content of config.log:
configure:581: checking host system type
configure:602: checking target system type
configure:620: checking build type
configure:675: checking for a BSD compatible install
