Yeah, create separate partitions for your /home and /usr/local directories. 
That way your data and many of your customizations are preserved when you 
upgrade to a new version, e.g., from YDL 3.0 to 3.0.1. Of course it's also a 
good idea to back up the /etc directory (you could copy the directory to /
usr/local or /home) prior to upgrading.
