There are several issues here.

1. Will you be running MacOS? If so you should get one that runs well
with the MacOS release that you run, either under MOL or native.
Many printers work with MacOS 9, a lot more work with MacOS X,
but there are some that don't and work fine with YDL.

2. Is price an issue? For example some inkjet printers can be easily
refilled, some cannot. The cost of operating Canon printers is 3 to 5
times the cost of a similar HP and up to 10 times the cost of some Epsons.

3. Is resolution an issue? For example I found that the cheapest Epson
had better resolution than HP printers up to 3 times the price for
BLACK ink. Where the HP's were better was color ink.

Note that many new printers have ROM chips in the cartridges to prevent
refilling. In the U.S. they are protected by the DMCA. In the EU, they
are now illegal and will be eliminated totaly in a few years.

Also note that Epson printer cartrides are only ink tanks, HP's include
a print head. Even if you don't plan on refilling them yourself, the
recycle value of an Epson is much higher as it can be refilled many
more times.

Now some words of advice.

1. Make sure you have the latest version of CUPS installed.

2. Look at the CUPS documentation and turn on the http interface.

3. Do not use the redhat printer configurator to install the printer.

4. Go to linuxprinting.org and install foomatic-rip and foomatic-gswrapper.

5. Define the printer using the http interface (http://localhost:631)

6. Replace the ppd file (in /etc/cups/ppd) with the one from linuxprinting.org.

7. Have fun.

Geoff.
