X wont boot

i have tried to follow the instructions on the page here but i am still 
unsuccessful.  i have three drives X on main 9.5 gig 9 on a 60 gig slave 
and yellow dog also on 40 gig slave.  the partition map for the ydl 
drive says the the partition map is #1, like it should be right?  i can 
still however still boot into 9 but when i try X it gives me the circle 
with slash.  any help would be greatly appreaciated.
