Dialup / ppp0 problem continued

My problem is greater than is understood.

During the item loading process (item by item listing) when it reaches 
the ppp0 it stalls and doesnot continue at all. I have left it sit for 
over an hour and it never picks up and goes on. It doesn't even fail out 
the item and go on it just sits.

Is there a way to skip an item during this loading process so that I can 
turn off the load at startup setting after getting to the command line?

Please help, if there is a fix. I really don't want to reload. I've done 
that 3 or 4 times now.
