Thanks everyone again for your thoughts and efforts in helping me to
resolve this headache.
Bruce Woller's response set me on the right track. Following his advise,
I dismantled the Apple Workgroup server so I could test the devices on
different buses - trying to make things work with the existing internal
SCSI cables!!
In the end I just did exactly as Bruce suggested and switched the
Seagate Hard Drive to the MESH bus (scsi1) and the Python Tape Drive to
53C94 bus (scsi2) - doing a lot of dismantling and rewiring in the
process. Now the tape backups are working fine!
