X windows on 3500 (KANGA) g3 laptop

Hi, I just installed YDL 3.01 on an Apple "powerbook g3" (the original
model aka 3500 or kanga).

It works fine with one problem. If I run X windows it comes up in 256 color 
mode. I was able to tweak it to use 16 bit color mode, but the colors are
all messed up. I see something in the X log file about an error setting 
colormap.

Anyone have any luck getting it run in 16 bit color mode?
