Pointers for getting a 2.6 kernel on a 3400c

I just ran "yum update" last night and I finally decided to update the
kernel. It gave me the 2.4.20-8e kernel. Fine. But I was really hoping for a
2.6 kernel.

My burning desire was to see if one those spiffy new 2.6 kernels will come
to my rescue and give me the hypersonic speed boost I've come to know and
love on my x86 boxes.

So this AM, I grabbed the 2.6.5 tarball from www.ppckernel.org. I opened the
tarball and moved the files to the right places (/boot/vmlinux-2.6.5,
/boot/System.map-2.6.5, and /lib/modules/2.6.5. And a copy of the kernel to
my System Folder/Linux Kernels, as I'm using BootX).

Well, it just isn't right. I have no module-info in /boot for the new
kernel. I get an error on startup that it cannot load hfs. Okay, so I guess
I'm outta luck mounting my Mac partition for a while....

It complains that it cannot find dependencies in
/lib/modules/2.6.5/modules.dep. When I run "depmod -a 2.6.5", I get:

depmod: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented

How on earth do I get the modules.dep created when I don't have modutils for
2.6?
