You can get most Linux apps on OSX (and yes, that means KDE, GNOME,
Blackbox etc)with either Fink:
	<http://fink.sourceforge.net/>
or DarwinPorts:
	<http://darwinports.opendarwin.org/>
You'll need to make sure that you have X11 and the Xcode tools installed
(they should be part of your install CDs - if not you can download them
from Apple).

Apple's X11 allows you to choose rootless or rooted modes (to use X with
or without the quartz-wm) under 'Preferences'.

I use Fink which uses .deb files for binary installs primarily via
apt-get and dpkg/dselect. It also has a very user friendly GUI in Fink
Commander (never tried Darwin Ports so I can't give you a comparison).
Fink also has a pretty large unstable tree and you can opt for other
methods of download as well (rsync, et. al.).

Both Fink and DarwinPorts have mailing lists you can subscribe too with
a fairly decent flow of traffic.

g'luck
