OpenOffice and Spell-Checking?

I'm having trouble getting OO to spell-check documents. I have 
myspell-en-us installed, yet when I  select Tools/Spellcheck, there is a 
brief delay and then "Spellcheck Complete." This happens although there 
are words spelled incorrectly. Any clues why this is happening and what 
may be the  answer?

In a related question, how do I add "Verdana" to my OO font list? I try 
to apt-get the msttfonts package and there is a message about it no 
longer being supported. Any tips on this one? Thanks.
