Upgrade YDL 3.0 to 4.0 on Oldworld G3

Disclaimer: I'm very much aware oldworld hardware is not officially
supported by YDL 4.0. But I tried anyway, and got pretty far... I don't
think even that the problem I'm having now is oldworld related, but
rather upgrade vs fresh install. Anyway, here goes:

Hi,

I started an attempt to upgrade my 3.0 installation to 4.0 on my
oldworld G3, following the instructions at
http://www.shiner.info/?manuals/ANS-from-3-to-4.html

Compared to these instructions, I had to remove a couple of
self-compiled packages before I could do the full upgrade, but then I
could continue.

After the reboot, I am facing a problem though:

KDE won't start anymore. I can start a gnome session (which I am using
now to type this message), but starting a KDE session gives me the
following error message:

startkde: Could not start kdeinit: Check your installation.

After clicking Ok, I can view a more detailed error log:

/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/X11/gdm/PreSession/Default: running /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w

As I see it, I have 2 problems apparently:
1. no fontserver can be found (no fs in ..., followed by an error
message in xset)
This only happens when starting kde, and maybe it's even a non-issue if
the other error is solved:

2. libqt-mt.so.3 can't be found. This is a bit weird, because it is
installed:

Is there a symlink missing, or another configuration not right ?

Anyone any ideas ?

Thank you,

Geert Jan
