Empty trash - Mozilla 1.6 (OT)

Has anyone installed Mozilla 1.6 on a MacOSX system? I just did so on my
wife's iBook. I probably should have installed 1.4, the most recent
stable install; but installed 1.6 before realizing it wasn't the most
recent stable ver. Anyway, installation went clean as a whistle. No
prob's--until I tried to empty the trash within Mail & Newsgroups. No
way can I get Trash to empty: Select Trash folder>File>Empty
Trash--nope. Select Trash folder>Edit>Select all>Delete--nope. Even if
I select an >individual message< in the Trash folder & click the Delete
button or Edit>Delete message, nothing happens--the trashed messages
just sit there. I've also tried to delete from the command line; but
the messages in the Trash folder are not showing up as separate files,
but as one big file marked "Trash"--and I'm assuming that if I deleted
that, I would be deleting the Trash folder itself.
I've searched the Mozilla site--no ref to this behavior as a known
bug--no ref to it at all that I can find. Has anyone else encountered
this behavior in Moz 1.6 for MacOSX? Any luck solving it? Can you point
me to somewhere in the Mozilla cosmos where I can get more info?
Thanks for any insights. --Harvey
