This has kinda piqued my curiosity.  I remember memtest86 being a 
bootable floppy and was wondering how to do that on a Mac.  Then I
did some Google searches and found this bash script from someone
at Redhat that should do the trick.

I have yet to try it, so if anyone does please post your results
and experience.
