getting first boot after install to work

I think I've installed 3.0.1 successfully on my 9600 (thanks,
everyone!).  Now I just can't boot the machine :-(

I think that I've got to put some magic incantations into the BootX
screen.  Trouble is, I don't know what to put there.

I've tried putting

  /dev/sda1
  /dev/sda7

into the boot device section, neither of which worked.  I have a MacOS
partition first on the distk, then the linux partition.  The sda7
setting seemed to get farther, it complained "no init found".

Please forward me to the correct web page if it exists, and thanks for
the help.
