I don't know, either. Annoying, isn't it? I wonder if
the reason is that the Mac uses "delete" to mean
"backspace-delete," while the PC likes
"forward-delete"? Try adding an external keyboard with
a "del" (not "delete") key, and see if that works.

In any case, control-d will delete e-mail in Evolution
(and F9 will check mail, I learned).
