You are probably talking about a "Power Macintosh G3"
(often called a "Beige G3"). Is this correct? If so,
the Beige G3 will NOT boot from the CD-ROM. Instead,
there is a different method to install Yellow Dog
Linux.
When you are ready to install YDL on your Beige G3, be
sure to read carefully:
<http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/installation/>
and download, read, and follow these instructions:
<http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/installation/ydl3.0_guide-single.pdf>
Most people who have problems installing YDL have
neglected to read these pages.

The Yellow Dog Linux installation procedure will
automatically create the correct Linux partitions. To
let it do this, do NOT create an ext2 partition.
Instead, install a small (about 250 MB) Macintosh HFS
(or HFS+) partition and install the Macintosh
operating system on that small partition. Leave the
remainder of your hard drive (5.75 GB) *unallocated*.
This is necessary before installing Yellow Dog Linux.
Here is a link to the procedure:

Good luck!
Best wishes,
Clint
