Kernel 2.6

All,
I bought a PowerBook G4(PowerPC CPU). I want to install linux. I bought  
Yellow Dog 3.0.1. I installed it on my Laptop and display is snowy. So I 
downloaded 2.6.7 kernel from kernel.org. I compile the kernel in following 
ways:
make xconfig
save config file without any change
make dep bzImage modules

copy the vmlinux to /boot/vmlinux.
Now my display is fixed but ethernet is not coming up. Incase if anybody has 
any suggestion would be highly appreciated.
