I set the key as 128bit on the router logging into it on my desktop PC, I
then copied the key first using iwconfig eth1 essid netname key
whateverthekeywas. This didn't work so I put the key into my
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 and that failed to work either,
and I made sure the key was copied properly. Any idea what else this could
be? Is there a better way of watching what "ifup eth1" is doing to get a
closer analysis of the problem or do I just have to blindly try it each
time?

Have you set the key you want to use on the router you want to use? Once the
key is set on the router it won't let you log on without they key. Then you
need to set it on the computer.

My network works fine in a "naked" environment (no key, broadcasting ESSID,

whole show down.

I need help getting encryption to work properly, when I fill in a key in
ifcfg-eth1 it doesn't connect to my router at all, but to the one down the
street that gives such weak signal strength I can't do anything, and it's
also an exposed connection.

Has anyone had any good luck with wireless encryption and gotten it to be
usable?
