Jim,
I googled "imac x config", found an xfree86 config file for an iMac DV (I have 
a G3 500Mhz slot-loading "grape" iMac), stuck it in my /etc directory, 
rebooted and X appeared -- took about 10 minutes. You might also try this 
great compilation of config files for all sorts of ibooks and imacs: 
ppcconfdb.sourceforge.net/?id=conf
