The kernel must not have PMU support compiles in.  You could try this 
iMac specific kernel it does have CONFIG_ADB_PMU set so it will 
generate the /dev/pmu.

Otherwise you can build your own kernel.  There are sources available 
at ppckernel.org.  It isn't that hard to do really just download the 
source and unpack it.  Then run 'make menuconfig' or 'make xconfig', 
then 'make deps && make vmlinux modules modules_install'.
