Adrian,
I have the powerbook model that came out after yours. My issue was
that my video card wasn't supported with 3.0.1 (ATI Mobility 9600 will
be supported in 4.0 I am told). Linux on any laptop is always a tricky
thing. If your machine is just booting to black then chances are your
yaboot may not be functioning. This could be an issue with the
partitions not being properly configured. If you haven't , I strongly
suggest you follow the install manual located here:

I just did exactly what was printed there and I got everything but
xfree86 running, and my laptop is not even listed as being supported.
