kernel config

Well I downloaded the only src kernel I could find that was ppc on
ppckernel 2.6-tss. This is my first total source compile and it wasn't
totally successful.
It wouldn't completely make the modules, it suggested that i needed to
install the modules init install tools, what the? It also returned an
error for a crypto module.
I went ahead and changed the symlink, copied vmlinux to /boot along
with the system.map made sure that yaboot conf vmlinux pointed to
vmlinux-2.6-tss. My yaboot conf has a pointer to an
initrd-2.4.5-22f.img contained in the boot directory I commented it
then rebooted. No joy twice!
I obviously missed something or did something wrong but be danged if I
can figure it out. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve
