www.slimpdevices.com has a open source server component that will run
on Linux, Unix, Mac and Windows. There are various open source
projects that mimic the functionality of Slimdevices hardware. One of
them that I use is softsqueeze http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net/.
There softsqueeze sourceforge site also has links to several other
software alternatives. You can also setup a MP3 stream from the
slimserver to be played using MP3 software like iTunes or Winamp, I
haven't yet tried streaming to any Linux MP3 players.
