Visual issue

I have been having some annoying issues on my Wallstreet G3, running 3.0.1.
(384 MB RAM, 2 GB HD, running video=atyfb:vmode:14 at BootX)

The video seems to screw up in refreshing quite often, this will be a few
lines of garbled text in terminal (X terminal, anything outside of X runs
perfect).  Blackboxes over text, and black lines in openoffice and lines in
firefox.  They don't render it unusable but it's really annoying.   Usually
a minimize/maximize sometimes fixes it, but then if I scroll down on the
document that usually fixes it as well.

Is there any way I could test to see if there's anything not installed or
not functioning to get a more definite way to analyze the problem?  Or has
anyone had any success with this?
