HOWTO build a 2.6 kernel for PPC

In the Jaunuary list there was a very good procedure
for building the 2.6 Kernel (2.6.1). I first loaded
the latest modutils I could find (2.4.26). I then
tried to build the kernel yesterday using the benh
kernel (now at 2.6.3) and had the following problems:

1. The file ipt_TCPMSS.c is missing from the
distribution. I copied it plus ipt_TCPMSS.h from a
vanilla 2.6.3 distribution and was able to
successfully build the kernel. The kernel does boot
and shows a major speed improvement over the 2.4.22-2g
kernel.

2. Unfortunately, The make modules_install errors out
on the dma_sound build.

3. The scsi configuration (for the CDROM) does not
appear to match the Hardware.

My questions is this:

Will taking the .config from the YDL 3.0.1 (2.4.22-2g)
kernel and using it in place of the .config in the
benh distribution work (copy the .config file and do a
make oldconfig)? I'm pretty much a linux novice and
am looking for a quick way to build the new kernel.

I know the 2.4.22-2g kernel works and works well for
the most part. The pmac_defconfig used with the make
command does not appear to support the Hardware (1 GHz
eMac) nor does it load some of the modules (microtek)
I am interested in. The kernel does allow usb.c to
see my scanner, so at least I might be on the right
track with this kernel.

Thanks for any info you can provide.
