AsanteFast 10/100, Tulip driver & 2.4.22g

I have a bunch of Power Mac 4400/200 that I'm wanting to install YDL 3.0.1 on. They don't have any onboard ethernet but instead use AsanteFast 10/100 PCI NICs using the Digital 21140 chipset. The machines generally work OK but ifconfig shows lots of TX errors on them:

RX packets:6184983 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:3453 errors:2633377 dropped:0 overruns:4 carrier:5266754

Thinking that the Tulip driver included with YDL 3.0.1 is a little bunk, I've tried compiling a new driver using the source from www.scyld.com/tulip.html, assisted by instructions from :

But so far I've been unable to get a driver that works. I get as far "insmod tulip.o" and then I get a nice kernel panic. I'm wondering if perhaps this driver and/or NIC just isn't going to work with a 2.4.x kernel as any instructions I've fo
und reference 2.2 kernels. Has anyone compiled this driver with anything newer or had any experience with the AsanteFast cards?
