Diks tools in unix

I know about pdisk to format, but are there (low level) disk tools
in linux I can use to see whats wrong with a disc?

A friend of mine has a crash with two of his discs in one week...
(80 gb and a 40gb from 2,5inch firewire box...)


His files suddenly became half their size, he told me...
He can still reformat, but does no longer trust the situation, as
he is in business...
