I'll speak a bit. I have a 200Mhz 604e 9600 with 128 MB of RAM. 
Neither KDE or Gnome comes close to working comfortably on my 
machine. I use ICEwm. There are plenty of other low requirement 
window managers besides ICE.  KDE and Gnome aren't.
