Loud fan on Powermac G5

There are two firmware updates, and one OS update for G5s on
www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/.

One labeled "Power Mac G5 Firmware Update 5.1.4" specifically states "...
and improves fan behavior in Open Firmware."  The other firmware update does
not mention fan control (but might help); and the OS update, well, wouldn't
make a bean's difference in linux.

Or it could be hardware.  If you know it's the machine, try this first.
