device-mapper missing from kernel?

Shawn,

I am doing something very similar and I've got it to work OK now.

i) LVM needs to be enabled in the kernel

ii) The device files are created when the machine reboots. There is a line
in /etc/rc.sysinit that does this.

action $"Setting up Logical Volume Management:" /sbin/lvm vgscan --mknodes && /sbin/lvm vgchange -a y

You can run these commands on their own without rebooting.

iii) When you create your logical volumes you might want to use the --minor option to fix the minor device file
numbers otherwise they get assigned in random fashion and nfs mounts may get jumbled.

I hope this helps

Subject:    device-mapper missing from kernel?

I am trying to set up a database server using YDL4.0 on a dual G5 with
two 250GB disks. What I would like to do is use LVM to manage the disk
space in order to have more than 250GB for my database files.

What happens is that the logical volumes devices are not created, the
error is /dev/mapper/control not found, device-mapper not in kernel?

I really need to get this server built and would like to know if this
has a known work around.
