[ydl-gen] Creating a clone boot disk

No I didn't.

When I did the copying it was installed in the middle slot (sdb)
but to boot I wanted it to be in the first slot (sda) so I thought that the
right
thing would be to leave the partition names as they would be when the
disk was used for booting.

Peter,

Did you edit the yaboot configuration file,

      /etc/yaboot.conf

on the clone disk, to reflect the partition names used on the clone
disk?
