problem building gplflash plug-in

I tried building the gplflash plug-in from source downloaded from
sourceforge. It failed, complaining:

checking for mad_frame_decode in -lmad... no
configure: error: *** GPLFLash requires libmad

Yet, yum says I have the latest libmad installed, 0.15.1b, which is the
latest available from the mad project on sourceforge.

A locate for libmad says:

Any ideas how to solve this?
