External FW setup

Not able to get my external firewire hard drive working yet.  Necessary
for me to learn and work on YDL 4.0. The HOWTO file
"FW-boot-setup.shtml.html" is not helping much.  Any other or simpler to
understand instructions.  I am new to this!! :c(

Partitioned in OSX with freespace.
I installed pdisk yet cannot find how to run it.
I will start over if necessary.
