YDL4.0.1 on PowerBook G4 500Mhz

Nope Sorry... :(

I've never tried 4.0.1, but the 4.0 installer ran flawlessly as long as I
didn't use the graphical version.

I installed it a lot with different software configurations:
- Partitioned by hand (with or without an already existing OSX partition).
- Let Druid do it for me (with or without an already existing OSX
partition).

Have you ever tried to install the (normal) 4.0 OS?
Perhaps that'll work on your machine, and then just update your system.

Is that an idea?
