I know you got a lot of good points there, but this stands out:

Kai loves KDE, and it has been the default desktop up through ydl 4.1
(even with RH and FC defaulting to gnome).

I dig gnome or icewm myself.  But you can only have 1 default and
it turns out that e17 will give _most_ users what they want in a
desktop with good performance.
