Yes, I'm sure you can rip pirated DVDs in Linux without any extra
applications since pirates have little reason to encrypt data. I can
confirm this without even trying. You can do it on any operating
system on any hardware. The fact that your movie is encoded in WMV is
a clear signal of that. Blu-ray and HD-DVD do not use Microsoft codecs
for the video stream.
