I had a similar problem with my PS2 LInux kit.

The easiest thing to do is check the setting on your TV.  Some
TV's have a "multimedia picture" setting which usually
helps...some. You can also turn down the brightness, the
brightness on most TV's is optimized for motion video
(TV/Tapes/DVD's) in living room lighting conditions not for
text.
