A few have preferred using it to either KDE or Enlightenment. My own preference has been to use Enlightenment exclusively as I found both XFCE and KDE getting in my way when I want to get something technical done. I'm partial to the interface which gets in my way the least as well as performing those graphic based interface functions which I don't care about, but are handled sensibly without requiring that I daily manage such minutiae directly - unless I choose to do so. It is from that perspective that Enlightenment functions very well, in my view. Regarding your other question regarding traditional Linux System Administration you may be aware of various standard tomes available via Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com. One online resource I've appreciated over the years is available from here: http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid39_gci1275447_mem1,00.html There are other valuable references which are online of course, but the academic training of this author, Ken Milberg, does not ruin the insight he offers in addressing real world System Administration tasks and information requirements. Other online references which could be useful to you are here: http://techpatterns.com/forums/about230.html http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/howlinuxworks/linux_hlrunlevels.html Remember to also participate on the Yellowdog Board; I've found useful information there as well. However in my situation it was a matter of cross-checking that what I was downloading was within the transmission parameters of the account I have with my ISP. I found it also useful to check the firewall settings within YDL and make sure it wasn't blocking everything or rather that what the firewall was blocking followed the restrictions which make sense within my environment. Unfortunately what makes sense for me to block may not be practical for you -- nonetheless check that your firewall within YDL is at an optimal setting for your needs. Remember also within YDL to check Network Device Control which you get to by: YDL Menu --> Applications --> System Tools --> Network Device Control Opening this particular application requires using your root password. When that has been done the Network Configuration dialog opens allowing several options within each tab. Make sure that each tab has the correct settings and listings of Ethernet devices used in the PS3. To change anything click on Edit and be sure to save any changed settings. You can set the Ethernet port to be active at boot or at command depending on your preferences but other possibilities exist as well. That got me out of a hole. I will see if I can find a spare drive that has enough disk space to do a dd image of the partition. I've already tried using the debugfs command but when I navigated to the parent directory of that which has been deleted and typed ls -d nothing other than the existing files/directories were returned. So far I have not been able to recover anything. I'm thinking of trying adding the drive to a WinXP system and using an undelete tool that supports the ext3 filesystem to attempt to recover the deleted directory and its contents. Many thanks again. If you already umounted it, then you just want to mount it read-only, not remount it, i.e. mount -o ro /home/Lnx_CAD2 The remount option is for if the file system is already mounted, and you want to change its usage, typically from ro to rw, which I've used from a single user boot. -Hope this helps -Bill From support at ridgedale.co.uk Wed Jul 15 07:27:12 2009 From: support at ridgedale.co.uk (Dene Stringfellow) Date: Wed, 15 Jul 2009 14:27:12 +0100 Subject: [ydl-gen] FileSystem Remount Readonly Issue - Help Please Message-ID: <4A5DD930.1040506@ridgedale.co.uk> Bill, Thanks for the clarification on where I was going wrong. If possible, I would like to boot into textmode directly from the kboot boot-loader by passing a bootstring to the loader. Furthermore, I presume I will need to know the root password since the PS3 which I have purchased came with linux pre-installed. Does anyone know what this password is or how I can obtain it? I would also like to know whether upon booting yellowdoglinux, the PS3 will connect to my wireless home network. Presumably, in order for it to connect, I would have to supply it with, at a minimum the SSID-network name to connect to the wireless reuter. Is it possible to perform this operation from the command line? Many thanks, John Goche -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To that end I have purchased the following box which should allow me to switch from my PC's output to the PlayStation output both attached to the output device: a computer monitor. The box specs are at: http://www.climaxdigital.co.uk/epages/BT3449.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/BT3449 However, this HDVGA2008 by Climax Digital lets me switch between the PC view (which works just fine) and the PlayStation 3 view (which does not work: it just displays a blank blue screen). It seems to me that for this purpose a 3-cable component and a composite cable are the same thing (I have looked at the connectors and they seem the same). I don't know why the PlayStation 3, when switched on, and routed through the box, just displays a blue screen instead of the XMB (CrossMediaBar)? I need something with support for such archaisms as an Old World ROM, ADB, SCSI, and a PCMCIA FireWire card that is PCILynx rather than OHCI (even with YDL 3 I needed to reconfigure the kernel for that one!). Also it should be lean enough to run with only 192MB of RAM. (Actually, I could probably continue to get by with YDL 3 if there's a modern browser that will compile under it. My understanding is it will support WiFi and I have gotten it working on an iBook. The iBook has an original Airport Card which is supposed to be the same as the Lucent/Orinoco cards commonly used in a Wallstreet. It has 320 Mb of RAM in it so I can't say how it would do with 192. However, unlike with Linux installations where you see the list of packages as they are installed, I was not shown anything in particular apart from a message saying it was updating data or something like that, and that after the update it would not have been possible to go back. Anyone have any idea of what exactly the update entails, and whether it affects a YDL 6.1 installation in any way. I bought the PS3 in november but have not had a chance to connect it to the internet until now. It came with YDL 6.1 preinstalled. Did you have to do anything special when installing Debian 5 to get it to run on the Wallstreet or did it just work? WiFi (via a Lucent WaveLan Silver card) works on the Wallstreet under YDL 3 so I suspect it would under Debian as well. Cheers, Ray P.S. I see at http://penguinppc.org/about/distributions.php that Debian, along with openSUSE and (Japanese) Vine Linux, is one of the few distros that still support Old World Macs. Here is what I do to connect: I click on the YDL Button in the upper left-hand corner and then select Applications -> Internet -> Wicd Network Manager (Network Manager) which starts the Wicd 1.5.3 program from wicd.sf.net and it offers me the a list of access points among which mine is of the following form: > foonet 62% WPA2 AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF Under Advanced Settings for the foonet access point I check the "Use Encryption" box and select the default "WPA 1/2 Passphrase" from the drop-down menu and then in the "Key" textbox I enter the same passphrase which I used to connect the GameOS to my home's wireless access point (say foopassword). When I try to connect from wicd to the wireless router/access point I see wicd go through the following stages: None: Putting interface down... foonet: Validating authentication... foonet: Obtaining IP address... and at this stage wicd waits for ever in the Obtaining IP address phase. I don't know what's wrong. When I type ifconfig at a shell prompt I see the interface wlan0. I can also see two other access points belonging to two of my neighbors with one using plain WPA and the other WEP. Any idea what is wrong here? Is it that the version of wicd that came with YDL 6.1 only supports WPA and not WPA2 or something? Any ideas? Should I disable WPA completely on the router just to get connected, then update wicd or something, and switch WPA2 back on, or should I update the whole system to YDL 6.2 (which I recall claims to have better Wi-Fi support)? Any help with this issue is appreciated? Also, I've inserted a USB key in one of the two ports but have not found any mount points under /mnt after this. I thought a program called automount would take care of this. Any ideas on how I can mount the USB key? I wanted to copy the output of ifconfig on my box and post it here but I really don't know how to mount a USB pen drive. Many thanks. Finally, is there any chance of using the PS3 DualShock3 game controller as an input device under Linux or does this require that a major device driver be written? I would really like to use it under Linux as well. Thanks for all your help! John Goche -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Check the logs for DHClient activity. While it appears you are authenticating when I run into trouble with wireless the first thing I usually do is to turn off encryption temporarily. Check your AP to see if it supports both TKIP and AES and that they are both enabled. I have mentioned before on this list that I am currently running YDL6.1 on my PM 7600/200 (OldWorld). You need to compile your own kernel as the supplied kernel does not have support for OldWorld features. I have upgraded using the yum upgrade method, the last direct install I did was for YDL3. I believe others have created their own boot init files and run the upgrade that way. For YDL3 to YDL4 upgrade see: http://www.yellowdog-board.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=381 The following link (you will need to put the parts together) seems to have a copy of the original shiner.info suggestions. http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/SmartMac-kung/article?mid=3053&prev=3054&next=1008 What I did was (roughly) to copy all the rpm files to an external drive, compile my own kernel and new yum, create a yum repository pointing to the directory with the rpm files. run 'yum update' You need to remove some items manually from your machine (use: rpm --erase --justdb to just remove it from the machines database, not from the machine). With this approach I have updated from 4 to 4.1, to 5, to 6 and now 6.1. > I need something with support for such archaisms as an Old World ROM, > ADB, SCSI, and a PCMCIA FireWire card that is PCILynx rather than OHCI > (even with YDL 3 I needed to reconfigure the kernel for that one!). > Also it should be lean enough to run with only 192MB of RAM. I must admit to having 1 GB of memory on my 7600/200 (and a G4 upgrade). However, I am still using SCSI, the only thing on the internal bus is the CD-ROM but I have two drives on an Initio Miles2 using the a100u2w driver. To reduce requirements I am still using fvwm2 as it is a fairly minimal manager. -- Stephen Harker s.harker at adfa.edu.au PEMS UNSW at ADFA From significant.bit at gmail.com Sun Jul 26 03:55:21 2009 From: significant.bit at gmail.com (Mike Erwin) Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 04:55:21 -0500 Subject: [ydl-gen] siggraph, anyone? The Cell is part of the PowerPC family of processors and not included in their list. So the bottom line is that although Truecrypt announces itself as open source it is not available currently, judging by the above listing, for the Cell and related systems. Truecrypt is one of a group of vendors which have chosen to not develop for PowerPC systems. If you refer to the discussion here: http://www.pcurtis.com/pgp.htm/ You'll notice that Truecrypt is best utilized as a kind of portable disk encryption system on USB drives. In my opinion, if you're serious about securing a portable device and/or the data stored within it then it is best to get Iron Key (http://www.ironkey.com/). You can also purchase it within Amazon.com. If a portable encrypted system doesn't really interest you then use yum to install gnupg which has been available within all incarnations of YDL including YDL 6.2. If you download the manual for gnupg you'll discover that you can encrypt files, emails, etc. Rather than repeat the capabilities of gnupg I'll share below what yum sees within the libraries available for YDL 6.2: [aguila at arakus ~]$ sudo yum info "*gnupg*" Password: Loading "installonlyn" plugin Installed Packages Name : gnupg Arch : ppc Version: 1.4.5 Release: 13.ydl.1 Size : 4.9 M Repo : installed Summary: A GNU utility for secure communication and data storage. BINARIES FOR ANY PARTICULAR PLATFORM ARE NOT PART OF THAT DEAL. SOME AUTHORS OF OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE _ALSO_ DECIDE TO MAKE AVAILABLE COMPILED BINARIES OF THEIR PACKAGES FOR SOME PLATFORMS IN ORDER TO MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR SOME USERS, BUT IN GENERAL, YOU SHOULD _EXPECT_ TO HAVE TO COMPILE YOUR OWN. I'm almost sorry for shouting, but not quite. The big deal is whether a particular software package compiles on any particular operating system with any particular compilers, not whether the author has access to all the hardware and compilers in the world and decides to produce ready-made binaries for this, that and the other. Unfortunately, sometimes assumptions are made by software authors that result in portability problems, such as "the word length of a computer is 32 bits", or "all computers are little endian", or "everybody uses the GNU GCC compiler collection", or "everybody uses Linux", or... The real deal is writing software with as few portability issues as possible. -- Atro Tossavainen (Mr.) / The Institute of Biotechnology at Systems Analyst, Techno-Amish & / the University of Helsinki, Finland, +358-9-19158939 UNIX Dinosaur / employs me, but my opinions are my own. < URL : http : / / www . helsinki . fi / %7E atossava / > NO FILE ATTACHMENTS From atossava+ydl at cc.helsinki.fi Wed Jul 29 03:30:26 2009 From: atossava+ydl at cc.helsinki.fi (Atro Tossavainen) Date: Wed, 29 Jul 2009 12:30:26 +0300 (EEST) Subject: [ydl-gen] truecrypt - anywhere?
