Bit late a reply but I would suggest perhaps considering not updating
your firmware if your PS3 linux is absolutely indispensable. I think
for now that burns the least number of bridges BUT of course could
make playing online / new games unlikely.

I have not used the hacked patch but I am concerned about using it
online with a false sense of security of Sony not being able to detect
it.

To be honest, Sony's actions have left me such a bitter taste in my
mouth that I hardly ever boot up my PS3 anymore - not even for games .
I have not updated my firmware but it looks like I'm going to mothball
my PS3 the way it is for now. Who knows, it might fetch some value
unpatched in the future.

If you must play online or get new games, perhaps buying a new PS3 may
be better. Or upgrading the firmware and just abandoning your ps3
linux.

Myself, I'm showing Sony the finger by not buying anymore PS3 stuff
(or Sony stuff for that matter if I can avoid it, but that in itself
is tricky given how much they actually own).

As many would say and coming even from ibm itself it would seem that
the cell is dead. The power arch is confined to niches. I spent many
an hour like yourself messing with YDL but I think it's time to move
on. IA32 / AMD64 is probably the only sensible desktop architecture at
the moment (I hope not for long but ... well you know... it's not like
the ARM movement is going to hit the desktop market in a big way just
now).

The reason I am still here is because YDL in their wisdom have made an
x86 YDEL / CUDA available for public download (Thank you very much). I
only just discovered this fact this week - previously I think it was a
paid download. So I am downloading this as we speak. Don't know too
much about CUDA but it looks, on superficial glances, somewhat less
complicated than the cell, to implement simple stuff. Could eat my
words here of course, hahaha.

If you've been pondering making the switch, I think this may help ease
the trouble of changing to a new architecture as I would expect it
would not be all too different a beast from YDL 6.2. There is also
CentOS / RHEL etc I guess which would be similar as well.
